I know I've taken a little break from posting anything about my book, and to those of you who have still been reading my blog, I can't thank you enough! I now have over 2,000 views from more than 30 different countries! It's pretty crazy. So to get back on track I want to tell you about Hollyhocks - the tiny little Sprite from my story, Beyond The Veil.
I could tell you about Hollyhocks many different ways; from the point of a writer, or her creator. really though, I feel like one of the Fates. I weave her story together and at any point I can cut the thread. But I'm going to talk about her like she's my best friend because I know her better than anyone, her thoughts and her emotions, etc.
Now I don't really give exact times or dates throughout my book, but I give a clue in the first chapter, which you can read by clicking the "Beyond The Veil" tab. Hollyhocks was born November 2nd, 1470. We're told that the sprites age differently than people do, so it's hard to say her exact age even though the story takes place in 1483. I think she really develops/matures by the end of the story though.
You know when you think about a certain person, one thing generally comes to mind? Well, when I think about Hollyhocks, the first thing that comes to mind is how incredibly sweet she is. You know some people are so soft-spoken, and they'll never say anything negative about about anyone, nor do they think it? I guess that's how I see Hollyhocks.
One thing about her that really stands out to me is that she's uh, what's the word? Man, for a writer, sometimes I stink at this. But don't tell anyone, ok? Seriously. ;) I think the word I'm searching for though is dreamer. She's a dreamer. She longs to be somewhere else, to see a different world. She see's things not for what they are, but for what she wants them to be. Actually, she's a lot like me. She's a little bit shy and reserved at times. She just needs someone who will be there for her though - someone she can open up with. She doesn't always say aloud the scores of thoughts racing through her mind, but when she opens up, she speaks very passionately with her heart open.
She's got a very caring soul and she's a great friend. She tries her best to always be there for the ones she cares for. I can't stress enough that Hollyhocks should never be taken for being stupid, she's just simple-minded. And why should she be otherwise? She came from a surreal world.
I suppose the saddest thing about Hollyhocks is that she was much like a child in the way that...well, I don't think I could say it better than Abraham Lincoln:
"In this sad world of ours, sorrow comes to all; and, to the young, it comes with bitterest agony, because it takes them unawares."
Eventually, Hollyhocks saw people be mean. She witnessed how cruel the human world could be. She herself felt like a tormented victim. But she never allowed any of it to break her spirit. She was stronger than that...and she was better than that.
I love that quote by Abraham Lincoln. (tear). I can't wait to read this when you're done!
